About Our Council:
Amador County Council, which was begun in 1910, was reactivated in 1997 through the efforts of many of the current Charter Members. Its original name, The Mother Lode Council, was lost following deactivation in 1926. Another council now has that designation.
During the Council’s first decade and a half, Amador County experienced a growth.Looking back 160 years, the construction of the first Catholic church in Amador County was St. Bridget Church in Volcano, built by a handful of local miners. By 1910, when the Council was formed, there were six Catholic churches in Amador County.Men from the various parishes and mission churches gathered to form the Mother Lode Council, 1849, with 30 charter members.
However, with the First World War over, and a declining population, by 1926 there were too few members to maintain the Council. The Council was listed as inactive until rechartered in 1997.
That didn’t mean that there were no members of the fraternity. Men from the various churches in Amador began to join the Council in Placerville and other towns close by.Eventually, with the help of the Knights from the Placerville council, 30 Knights came together and petitioned to recharter Council 1849.The Knights of Columbus Council in San Andreas now has the “Mother Lode Council” name. So the reconstituted Council took the name Amador County Council.
Council 1849, is a vital part of the Amador County Catholic Community, with almost all of its members in St. Katharine Drexel Parish. It serves the entire parish in Amador County.
A key understanding for the Amador County Council 1849 is the importance of Family. Whenever and wherever possible, families are included in the activities of the Knights of Columbus.
The Council meets on the second Tuesday of the month in the St. Katharine Drexel Fellowship Hall for dinner at 5:30 pm.The monthly business meeting begins at 6:30 in the “St. Teresa of Calcutta” Room.
The Amador County Council #1849 serves the entire County of Amador as well as parts of El Dorado, Calaveras, and Sacramento Counties. The Grand Knight for the 2022-2023 Columbian Year is Brother Justin Machovec. For additional information, contact us. Use this link.
